Aims:
- Promote effective and sustainable intercultural dialogues
- - Promote appreciation and respect of cultural diversity
- Develop intercultural skills

Awards
l Unless otherwise specified, awards will be made for 3 first places, 6 second places and 9 third places.
l All winning entrants will receive an electronic certificate.
Certificates will be awarded in the last session of this term.
l All winners will receive their name listed on the homepage of our ICC website, and their autobios published on this website.
l Outstanding winning essays will be selected to be published in the e-journal Frontiers in Transcultural Communication.
l Parts of the winning essays will be selected to the forthcoming ICC textbooks or related theoretical publications.

Essay Submission: May 30th, 2016 , no later than 11:59 PM, Beijing Time.

Notification of Outcomes: June 20th, 2016(for Spring term); Jan 15, 2017 (for Autumn Term).

Guidelines
· One entry per person.
· Essays should focus on the international / interracial / inter-ethnicity level
· Language requirements: either in Chinese or in English.
· Mechanics: make sure you have few or no errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraphing.
· Formats:
· Specify your file name: e.g. 201612 Zhang Li IC Autobio
· Include your name, major, registered number, and email at the end of your text.
· Include an outline and several sections. Give each section a subtitle.
· Medium: MS WORD file; Document Size: A4
· Font: 12 point Times New Roman; Line Space: 1.5 space
· Pages numbered.
· Word limit:
No fewer than 1000, and no more than 5000, words in length;
(Citations and bibliography are not included in the word count).
· Originality: Essays must be the original work of entrant and must be owned by the entrants. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
· Submission: via the column of “Assignments” in the ICC course website

Other Important Reminders:
· Entrants understand and acknowledge that it is a condition of participation, that all submitted essay may be used in their publications.
· Entrants therefore please write those that do not violate your privacy.
· Entrants reserve their rights to decline any publication. If unwilling to be published, please notify us on the upper right corner of your manuscripts.
· The organizers will respect the privacy of the authors by:
a) To protect their privacy. In all kinds of publications, all the real names will be replaced with pseudonyms and private information will be deleted or altered).
b) Informing them of the adoption or adaptation of their cases via e-mail (the writers may need to update their new address, were there any change.)
· Essays must not infringe on any third party rights or intellectual property of any person, company, or organization. By submitting an essay to this Contest, the entrant agrees to indemnify(补偿) the organizers for any claim, demand, judgment, or other allegation arising from possible violation of someone’s trademark, copyright, or other legally protected interest in any way in the entrant’s essay.

Prompts for My Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters

How would you define yourself? Think about things that are especially important to you in how you think about yourself and how you like others to see you.*

l Milestones (critical events that shaped the big turn of your ICC development, see the prompts in the Appendix 2 below)

- Did you have any unforgettable /excited/proud /surprised/ trying / awkward moments? Could you describe it (how come it occurred and how did you feel)?
- What was your biggest intellectual gain in this term? Why?
- What was your biggest gain emotionally / spiritually in this term? Why?
- How did you apply your learnt ICC knowledge into your real-life communication?
- What is your suggestion to your teacher(s) or the future students or to people who may face similar situations that you experienced?
Prompts for reflecting on your unforgettable intercultural events:
1. What happened when you met whom? Where? What were you doing there?

2. Who else was involved? Write something about them …
3. Describe how did you feel at the time.
4. How do you think the other people felt/thought in the situation at the time?
How did you know?
5. Thinking about the similarities and differences between the ways in which you thought and felt about the situation and the ways in which they thought and felt about it … were you aware at the time of any similarities/differences and, if so, what were they?
Looking back at the situation …are you aware now of any other similarities / differences and if so what are they?
How do you see your own thoughts, feelings and actions now?
6. When you think about how you spoke to or communicated with the other people, do you remember that you made adjustments in how you talked or wrote to them?
